“The man who works from 8 to 8 every day will both be very successful…
and fondly remembered by his widow’s next husband.”
That line usually gets a laugh.
But it should also make you stop and think.
Because I see it all the time, smart, capable, driven people who are working harder than ever… and enjoying life less than ever.
They’re successful on paper. But exhausted in reality.
And here’s the truth most people don’t want to hear:
You’re not overwhelmed because you have too much to do.
You’re overwhelmed because you haven’t decided what not to do.
Clutter Isn’t Just Physical, It’s Mental and Emotional Too
When people hear “simplify your life,” or “get some work-life balance,” they think about cleaning out a closet or organizing a desk.
That’s fine, but that’s not the real problem.
The real clutter is:
- Too many commitments
- Too many priorities
- Too many “yeses” you didn’t mean
- Too little time to think
And that kind of clutter leads straight to stress, burnout, and a life that feels out of control.
I’ve worked with executives who had calendars so packed they didn’t have ten minutes to think… and then wondered why they felt stuck.
I’ve also worked with people who said yes to everything meetings, favors, committees, obligations until they quietly resented the very life they built.
That’s not success.
That’s overload.
► Step #1: Make Time to Think (Yes, It’s That Important)
You cannot simplify your life if you never step back and look at it.
And yet, that’s exactly what most people avoid.
In fact, when is the last time you sat down and really REALLY thought about your life and how you’re living?
I would guess it’s been a long time. Because I find very few people who just stop … stop everything … and just think about this.
So here’s your first move and it’s non-negotiable:
Carve out fifteen minutes a day for the next 30 days to think.
No phone.
No email.
No distractions.
Just you and a few honest questions:
- Am I working too hard… or just inefficiently?
- What am I doing that doesn’t really matter?
- Am I working at a job I don’t enjoy?
- Am I letting the little things clutter up my life?
- What’s draining my energy?
- What would I stop doing if I were starting over today?
Most people never ask these questions.
And that’s why they stay stuck.
Start by thinking about questions such as these. Think about what you can cut back or eliminate and how you could do that.
Remember…
You’re not overwhelmed because you have too much to do.
You’re overwhelmed because you haven’t decided what NOT to do.
► Step #2: Get Rid of the Clutter.
One thing you must decide is that you will NO LONGER PUT UP WITH clutter.
If you walk into your office and feel deflated by the mess, take this step to heart.
Whether it is papers piled on your desk, the floor or in boxes, or whether it’s dozens of post-it notes all over the place, such clutter wastes your time and stresses you out.
You waste your time digging through piles, trying to find things you need. And you waste your time reading all the post-it notes over and over again, trying to find out what you have to do first.
In fact, if you walk into a room in your office or home and your stomach sinks, that’s your signal.
It’s time, right now, to devote 15 minutes each day to that space, getting rid of clutter.
Do it every day until you walk into that room and actually feel light instead of heavy.
► Step #3: Eliminate those Things You’re Tolerating
You must also decide you will NO LONGER TOLERATE minor stressors.
List 25 things you’re putting up with, such things as a dirty car, a squeaking door, or a picture that won’t hang straight.

Pick the ten easiest ones to take care of and fix them now. Most of them won’t take more than a few minutes.
Believe it or not, those things you’re tolerating are costing more of your precious energy than you realize.
Notice how you feel each time you eliminate one of those items. You’re going to feel great!
► Step #4: Learn the Skill That Changes Everything Saying “No”
Let me be blunt:
You will never have a simple, balanced life if you can’t say “no.”
Not occasionally.
Not when it’s convenient. But consistently.
This is where people struggle the most.
They don’t want to disappoint others.
They don’t want to miss out.
They don’t want to look unhelpful.
So they say yes… and pay the price later.

Here’s a better way to respond:
- “I’m not taking on any new commitments right now.”
- “That’s not one of my priorities at the moment.”
- “I’d love to help, but I can’t give it the attention it deserves.”
Clear. Respectful. Final.
And incredibly freeing.
A Hard Truth Most People Avoid
If your life feels cluttered, overloaded, or out of balance…
It’s not because you lack time.
It’s because you haven’t made the hard decisions about what matters most.
And until you do, nothing changes.
