► Strategy #3: Exhibit Appropriate Authority
People won’t WANT TO cooperate with you if they see you as having zero authority.
And Appropriate Authority doesn’t come from power, control, and position. It comes from credibility. People trust you.
You build it when you:
It’s okay to let people know about your educational background, certifications, and legitimate titles … in subtle ways. No boasting or arrogance. When others know these kinds of things about you, it increases their respect for what you say and what you are requesting.
-
Present yourself professionally and confidently. In the work world, dress one or two levels above the folks you are trying to influence. That’s appropriate authority. If you dress higher than that, your employees may not think you can identify with them. And if you dress below your employees, they may not take you seriously.
There’s just one caution. You can’t exhibit so much authority that people are afraid to challenge you. That would violate the second principle of “being likeable.” That’s why point #3 says “Exhibit Appropriate Authority.”
As Cohen and Davis cite a Harvard study, many of the medication errors in hospitals are due to the fact that healthcare workers are afraid to challenge doctors who exhibit overwhelming authority. They even cited the case of the “rectal earache.” A physician ordered ear drops for a patient’s right ear, abbreviating his orders to read, “Place in R ear.” Even though the treatment made no sense, the duty nurse promptly put the prescribed number of drops into the patient’s rear.
Authority that cannot be questioned becomes dangerous.
Takeaway:
Appropriate authority invites dialogue, not silence.
