If You Don’t Stand For Something, You’ll Fall For Anything
This decrepit old building reminded me of the title of this blog. The building was about to fall over, and in a similar sense, some people’s lives and careers are about to fall over.
And the reason is simple. Some people have never taken the time to figure out what’s most important to them. And they’ve never taken the time to clarify what they stand for. So they fall for anything.
They fall for 1001 distractions screaming for their attention each day, and most of those distractions aren’t all that important when you look at them from the perspective of a lifetime or an eternity. The biggest and most important items … like our health, our marriages, our spirituality, and our financial security … get overlooked. That’s tragic.
That’s why I’ve kept a poster on my office wall that says, “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” I don’t want to take that chance. And so the poster is there, serving as a constant reminder … telling me I need to live my life on purpose and not by accident.
Once you figure out what you stand for, your life and career will take an immediate turn for the better. As Roy Disney, the brother of Walt Disney, said, “When your values are clear, decisions are easy.”
