Almost everyone wants to be successful. In fact, I’ve never met anyone who wants to be a failure … even though many of them are.
And one of the reasons some people fail in life and fail at work is the simple fact they don’t know what it takes to be successful.
After all, how many classes did you take in elementary school, high school, college, or graduate school on discovering your purpose, setting your goals, building your self-esteem, developing your attitude, and overcoming obstacles? Probably none.
So your success was left to chance. If you were lucky you got to a seminar that changed your life and ensured your success … such as my “Journey to the Extraordinary” experience. Or you may have had the good fortune of being mentored by someone who already knew the road to success.
Well, let me suggest that you can be much more successful than you are right now … if you know how to get it … if you know what steps you have to take.
I think Scott Schilling does an excellent job of outlining all the steps with his acronym: “A DREAM I … LIVE.” You can’t go wrong if you follow these steps.
“A” stands for “Awareness.” In other words, you have to start by being totally honest about where you’re at in life. No denial, no excuses, and no justifications. You’ve got to admit that you’re in a dead-end job or a lifeless relationship or whatever else. You can’t expect to go further in life if you’re not aware of your present situation, no matter how good or bad that might be. You’ve got to start with “Awareness.”
“D” stands for “Decide Your Future.” As silly as it sounds, many people have never even gotten this far in life. They’ll say such things as “I don’t know what I want to do when I grow up,” and they’re still saying that when they’re 60 years of age. For heaven’s sakes, you only get one chance at life on this Earth, so you’d better do it right. Take whatever time you need to figure out what you want your future to look like … because sure as heck, if you don’t know what you want, you’re not going to get it.
