3 Qualities Of Effective Communication

In the old classic movie, “Cool Hand Luke,” the prison guard says, “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”  And that’s what we have here … in so many organizations and so many families.

If you ever hope to be an effective communicator, even a great, inspiring communicator, your messages have to pass 3 tests.  Your messages have to explain, illustrate, and apply.

Maybe you’re leading a staff meeting or sending out an e-mail message.  Before you do that, ask yourself if you explained things so clearly that everyone understands what you’re saying.  Ask yourself if your message illustrates your point with some example that further clarifies your point as well as engages the other person’s emotions.  And finally, does your message touch upon the other person’s needs and his/her life in such a way that he is compelled to apply your message?

If you can answer yes to all 3 criteria, you’re well on your way to be a great communicator.
